BACKGROUND

During the IOC-WESTPAC 10th intergovernmental session in Phuket, Thailand (12-15 May 2015), members of the IOC express their full support for the project. Countries which include China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Russia and Myanmar has express their interest during the proposal presentation.

Early effort for the project was established through discussion among researchers form only few countries. We extended our invitation to attract other researchers but unfortunately there are very few responses. Thus, this initiative for the first workshop will be very important to attract important researchers of the field and interested researchers who involved in upwelling studies in their country to contribute to this effort. We intended to use this meeting as a starting point to enhance discussions and collaboration by gathering important information related to upwelling from all countries bordering the South China Sea and surrounding ocean.

We believe it is the right time for us to put collective effort in understanding the upwelling dynamics in the region. Upwelling dynamics holds a very important value that require special focus if we are serious in managing our ocean resources. Effects of climate change, monsoon variability, and ENSO on the upwelling system are poorly understood. On the other hand, the effect of upwelling on HAB has recently attract many interest from researchers. There are still many aspect of the seas in our region that are not well comprehended. Thus, the meeting will hopefully can become very important initiatives to address these concern.

OBJECTIVES

The first regional workshop will present and discuss the existing understanding of upwelling area and its dynamics within the region of South China Sea and surrounding oceans. This information will then be collected and compiled for publication in a presentable format for reference by others.

In addition, we intended to explore ideas and suggestion through open forum with expert to address important issues and explore new ideas to further establish the effort of the group, for the benefits of IOC/WESTPAC countries member.

  • Set up research network on upwelling studies & Multi disciplinary field that benfits from the upwelling studies
  • Share the upwelling current knowledge/identify knowledge gap. Impact on socio-economic impact
  • Develop join join collaboration/studies and synegize effort. Explore the possibility for joint studies among countries, about upwelling in the region

CONDUCT OF WORKSHOP

The first day will consist of presentation by experts of the field. This will provide overview on the upwelling dynamics of the region within SCS and surrounding oceans. We plan to cover topics related to these area and topics:

  • Newly studied upwelling region in east cost of Peninsular Malaysia, Northeast Borneo and south Java.
  • Upwelling in Vietnam, Philippinesand China coasts
  • Development of upwelling studies in Japan and Korea
  • Deep Chlorophyll Maximum (DCM) in upwelling region
  • Influence of upwelling on HAB

On second day, we will organize an open forum to discuss the future plan of the group. This platform will be used to explore ideas and suggestion such as;

  • Pilot site for upwelling studies through data integration
  • Upwelling data analysis workshop for marine scientist.
